Few states of laws on books related to data breaches!

Digg!

I was suprised when I saw this article, but in the same breath not suprised.  Just 23 states require companies and government agencies to notify consumers and law enforcement agencies of a data breach.  Just 14 states give consumers rights to put a security freeze on their credit reports.

So in more than half the states in the country a company doesn’t have to tell anyone if they have a data breach at their company.  You have to be kidding.  How can we as consumers protect ourselves if we don’t know when?
Half that many states have consumer protections in the way of security freezes.

Come on, we can do more, much more to protect our data.  Let’s pressure our legislators to get serious about this serious crime.  Pressure them to establish standards for the protection of personal data, require notification in the event of a data breach, and allow consumers the opportunity to protect themselves (at not cost) with security freezes on their accounts.  This doesn’t require billions of tax payers money.  Contact your legislators today with this link.
